11 bad and outdated job-hunting tips you should stop believing

11 bad and outdated job-hunting tips you should stop believing11 bad and outdated job-hunting tips you should stop believingGone are the days where you could send your resume to a few dozen companies, pour yourself into your best suit for the bewerbungsgesprch, and have a steady, 9-to-5 job with benefits and a pension. Now, youll have to be a bit more inventive to get your dream job, said The Muse expert career coach Evangelia Leclaire.Job seekers need stop believing that a linear and congruent career path and long term employment at one or a few companies is what will give them a competitive edge, Leclaire, who is also founder and chief evangelist of Ready Set Rock Academy, told Business Insider. Thats just not the norm anymore. When youre looking for a job, you dont need to wear a suit to an interview or ignore opportunities that appear outside of your comfort zone. Plus, the advice follow your passion isnt always the best. Here are some more outdated job tips to discardNo matter what , follow your passionYou quit your job to open a cupcake bakery, because you love cupcakes. But then it doesnt take off - so you give up and go back to the cubicle mines. It didnt have to be like that. Following your passion doesnt always mean turning your most beloved hobby into a job.Instead, think about why you enjoy baking cupcakes. Is it because you enjoy the chemistry behind baking? Serving others? As Steve Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson put it The important point is to not just follow your passion but something larger than yourself. It aint just about you and your damn passion. In other words, did the world need another cupcake store? Or could your passion for cupcakes be expressed in a more constructive fashion that could help others while being fulfilling for yourself? You really SHOULD get your MBA.We all know someone who insists that they should learn Chinese or get an MBA or start writing a novel.Career and wellness coach Joanna Echols calls it should-ing all over ourselve s.It starts with an assumption that somebody else knows better whats right for you and what you should do, Echols told Business Insider. Claim back your personal power and let your own choices and decisions guide your job hunting process. And, above all, even if you think you should go into business, you probably wont be very good at it if youre just there because you think you should do it.All you need to do is make your rsum better, then youll get any job.Leclaire said you can re-design, beef up the key words, and edit your rsum all you want. Its not going to make or break your career.Thats just a small sliver of the pie, Leclaire said. Its not what moves the needle. She added Look at the big picture and take a holistic approach to your job search. Work on distitelseiteing and pursuing opportunities that fit you. Focus on your mindset, building relationships, networking, LinkedIn, job search strategy, your communication, maximizing your time, and more.Networking is so awkward. Its b etter to just avoid it.We often view networking as a bunch of people in a room being fake. But thats only if you make it so.Share a concise and transparent version of your story, ask questions, and actively listen, career coach Marc Dickstein told Business Insider. Authentic curiosity is your ticket to a worthwhile conversation and a meaningful connection.Leclaire underlined curiosity, as well. She said you should try asking people, What are you focusing on? or, Id love to explore how I can support you. These simple phrases take the presaya off of feeling like you need to sell yourself or have some polished elevator pitch every time you connect with someone, Leclaire said. Go about connecting with people from a place of curiosity and contribution. You majored in Spanish, so clearly youre not really a numbers person. Better stay away from those business analyst roles.People who believe that their abilities and interests are permanent are less likely to be interested in new information and fields, Business Insiders Shana Lebowitz recently reported. For instance, you may have concluded that you could never go into programming simply because your brain doesnt work like that. But you dont know if you would like coding, art, or some other field until you try it.If you apply to 30 places, for sure youll get a job somewhere. This is also called the spray and pray, Dickstein said.It seems smart you increase your odds by just increasing the number of recruiters who have your application in their pile. But alas, recruiters can usually see through this - and they wont be calling you in for an interview. Its easy for recruiters to identify thoughtful applications that are tailored to the opportunity, Dickstein said. You should end your cover letter by saying, I will call you on the 12th to schedule an interview. You may have been told that you should end your cover letter with a call to action - or, tell them that youll be calling them to schedule an interview. It seems like a way to appear passionate about the position, while also guaranteeing an opportunity to explain yourself beyond the written word. But dont do it.According to The Muses Lily Zhang, this cover letter line will make you seem egotistical and possibly delusional.I have no idea where this (threatening) advice originated from, but ending your cover letter like this will not give the impression that youre a go-getter who takes initiative, Zhang wrote.Hard skills are most important.Theres no denying that hard skills are important - but theyre not all thats important. Maybe you know the right programming languages, speak Italian fluently, or can plow through projects.Dickstein said those are all givens when youre applying for highly competitive roles. The next step Showing that youre passionate, have the right social savvy to be a great leader, or are an amazing public speaker. That job hasnt been posted online yet, so you probably shouldnt apply.Maybe you caught wind that your dream company is opening a position thats right for you.Dont hesitate just because there isnt a link online to apply, Dickstein said. In fact, thats really the opposite of what you should do - ask a contact or who you think is a hiring manager about the opening and how to apply.Hiring managers often know about functional needs and opportunities before they are made public, Dickstein said. In many cases, recruiters begin to fill the pipeline early and even begin to screen potential candidates.Make sure your application is full of buzzwordsLavishing on the buzzwords wont make you look in-the-know. It will just annoy whoever is reading your application.Buzzwords have become so overused that theyve lost all meaning, Mary Lorenz, a corporate communications manager at CareerBuilder, previously told Business Insider. So, even if you are a social media influencer or someone who thinks outside the box, that really doesnt mean much.Using some of these words wont necessarily disqualify you, but make sure tha t youre telling your story - not decorating it for the holidays, Dickstein said.Go for action words that actually communicate what you did. Dickstein recommended words like achieved, negotiated, budgeted, or improved. Its just a job. Find something that pays well, even if its not all fun and games.Youll spend around 90,000 hours of your life at work. If you hate every passing minute of your job, that adds up to a lot of misery.Looking for a new job can be the perfect opportunity to seek out something that aligns with what you want to do with those 90,000 hours. Dont just seek something that pays well - look for something that fulfills you.Your career choices can have a significant impact on your health and wellbeing, Echols said. Lack of job satisfaction or work-related stress are major causes of anxiety, depression and other mental and physical disorders. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Old-school business lessons from the butcher, the baker ...

Old-school business lessons from the butcher, the baker ...Old-school business lessons from the butcher, the baker ...I was once chatting with the owner of a local bakery when she confided something unexpected. She said she probably knew mora about her clients than any other merchant in the area. As someone baking for a close-knit community, she knew when someone was celebrating, or someone was mourning she knew when someone was eating their feelings, or even when someone was being passive/aggressive by intentionally not ordering their spouses favorite baked goods, and later claiming the bakery was sold out. In other words, my local baker knew pretty much everything going on in other peoples lives, even when they were completely unaware theyd been noticed.Wouldnt these be excellent skills for someone working in a competitive environment? And no. I dont know any candlestick makers, so well skip that one.The Butcher A cut apartIm mostly vegetarian, so Im probably not the person to discuss the finer points of fine cuts of beef, but there is an art to cutting to perfection. Some cuts of meat rise above the rest and are priced accordingly, while others are given funny names and priced to sell. A talented butcher can understand that a fine cut one way or another produces a superior product or something that people just cant stomach. In the work environment, sometimes you might feel like youre serving up the same old thing day after day after day. So, how can you make your work stand out? Look at what youre producing with a critical eye from time to time. Has your work become something less than fascinating? The Polite Way to Call Your Boss Out on a Mistake - The Muse

The Polite Way to Call Your Boss Out on a Mistake - The MuseThe Polite Way to Call Your Boss Out on a Mistake Signs your anfhrer is a humanShe breathes. He eats lunch. She uses words like weekend. He comes in some mornings and says, Im tired. She leaves on Thursday and is all, Thank the lord tomorrow is Friday. He sometimes gets a little bit of his lunch on his keyboard, and wipes it up with his shirt when he thinks no one is looking. You get what Im saying Bosses are human beings, too. Sure, they make more money than you. And sure, they have the fancier title- but theyre not infallible, and they do make mistakes. I certainly hope not life-changing ones, but definitely double-booking-on-the-schedule level errors.Take me for example Im a boss. And I occasionally mess up- in the office, and in the Chipotle line when Im being rushed. (May she who said no guac when she meant guac, yes, obviously guac cast the first stone.)Back in my underling days of yore, I used to spend hours stressing out a bout whetzu sich or not I should tell my manager that he made a mistake. I would sit in my chair, wringing my hands in agony, weighing out the pros and cons of saying something. Then, by the time I did, hed respond, Why didnt you tell me this morning? and Id have to say, Um, because I didnt want to hurt your feelings? After getting promoted to a managerial role and seeing the situation from the other side, I realized none of that stress welches ever worth it. One of my writers at a former company used to approach me using the same tone of voice usually reserved for tragic deathsExcuse me, Jenni, Ms. Maier, Madame, um, I think, OK, there might be a typo, or it might totally be on purpose, in that article you just put up. But, you know, Im also bad at reading, so Im probably just dumb.Nine-and-a-half times out of 10, there was a typo in the article. And I wasalwayshappy when it was brought to my attention. Not only did I want a typo-free site for my brands sake, but I also wanted it fo r my reputations sake. After all, I am an ed-i-tor (pronounced in that fancy French way that demands you dangle a long cigarette out of your mouth). While there are certainly supervisors out there who take this very personally (and if thats the case, know that it will be more out of embarrassment than anger toward you, even if the reaction seems otherwise), odds are high that your boss will be happy you helped him or her look better. Assuming, of course, that you do it the right way.How to Do ItI promise you that its much less complicated than youre making it out to be- just approach the situation politely and directly.I say politely to remind you that people usually arent proud of their mistakes, so having a tone that even remotely reeks of you stupid over-paid chump, here I am again, doing your job for you wont help it go over well. Especially since this (hopefully) isnt about one-upping your manager and making her feel stupid. And I say directly, because your boss is busy. Theres no time to beat around the bush. Yes, he or she has feelings (as pointed out above), but he or she also just wants to know whats up. So, theres no need for a long email laying out every possible, hypothetical reason its not a mistake.Just go for something simple like thisHi Boss,I saw that you scheduled our marketing meeting for 2 PM today, however I have my dentist appointment then. Can we reschedule? Im available that morning before noon and Wednesday between 3 to 5 PM.Let me know if either of those times work for you,Dutiful EmployeeOr thisHi Manager,I just received your email about the accounting error. Im guessing you meant to send that to someone else, so I wanted to let you know. Dont worry- Ill keep it confidential.Professional SubordinateDone. Now see, thats a lot easier than spending your morning Googling, How do I hack into an email account to unsend something? Especially because your boss will most likely respond with some variation of, Whoops, youre right. And life will go on as normal.Photo of co-workers talking courtesy of Shutterstock.

Employees Want Better Workplace Communications

Employees Want Better Workplace Communications Employees Want Better Workplace Communications Companies are investing substantial resources to create great corporate cultures and employee experiences, yet they are using outdated and ineffective methods to communicate with their employees, Keith Kitani, cofounder and CEO of workplace communications platformGuideSpark, said in a press release about the study.Employees expect communications from their employers regarding a wide variety of subjects, including healthcare enrollment details andDepartment of Labor regulations. Most companies deliver behauptung communications via postal mail or mass emails, both of which are easily missed or ignored by employees. Some organizations disseminate the information through managers who do not specialize in human resources and are therefore ill-equipped to convey the information or answer employee questions. Its important to remember that one size does not fit all, Kitani says. Companies need mult iple types of content to reach all of their employees in ways that work for them. For example, not all employees are sitting in front of their computers, so having content delivered via mobile is important. Employees want a personalized, interactive, multi-content, multi-device experience.Employer-employee communication was very much a one-way street in the past. Today, however, employers can use technology to gather meaningful data on topics such as how content is consumed, which devices employees use, and which media types are most effective.I think its important to look at how employees consume content in their daily lives, says Kitani. The consumer market has already given us a great blueprint for this, and what weve learned there can be applied to todays workforce. With all the digital noise, companies should understand that employees cant consume information in huge chunks it must be digestible over time and on demand. In the survey, 54 percent of employees said they learned ab out company announcements through their colleagues around the proverbial water cooler. This type of communication can be unreliable and inconsistent, and it is not guaranteed toreach everyone. Many employees also indicated that they receivedcompany announcements through managers. With todays increasingly distributed workforce, however, its not a good idea to rely on face-to-face interactions to receive important news in a timely fashion.Furthermore, many employees especially millennials and Gen. Z-ers use visually engaging social tools to communicate, but their employers are still using traditional text-based and word-of-mouth methods.Maintaining effective communication with employees at everypoint in their tenure from the earliest stages of the hiring process all the way through to retirement is critical for company success, but organizations face big challenges todoing so. One of the biggest challenges is the disparate communication methods used by the various groups involved i n the employee life cycle. When the recruiting team, the compensation and benefits team, and the learning and development team all use different methods, communication can become fragmented.By delivering a consistent digital experience throughout, not only is it easier for employees to follow along and digest information that is both timely and relevant for them, but also it reinforces a companys culture, tone, and style something thats missing from static, text-based materials, Kitani says. Here are GuideSparks five best practices for employee communication that deliver the biggest impacts1. Use Multiple Content TypesTodays workforce is multigenerational and diverse. Companies can no longer rely on traditional communication methods, such as manuals or in-person seminars. Videos, campaigns, and SMS texts need to be added to the mix.2. Create Interactive, Mobile-Accessible ExperiencesNot all employees sit in front of a computer or can get their info from a breakroom or water cooler. A mobile-first approach has broader reach, and embedding interactive components helps keep employees engaged.3. Deliver User-Guided, Personalized ContentIn the consumer digital world, employees are used to navigating how and when they access content, so the corporate environment needs to model that practice. Taking this one step further, the most engaging apps, e-tailers, and social networking sites all offer a personalized experience. HR teams that recognize these trends and adapt accordingly have the highest engagement stats.4. Break ContentingInto Short, Digestible Segments Over TimeThe oversaturation of data, content, and media types has created a lot of digital noise. The consumer-trained employee no longer has the time to read long emails, sit through a presentation, or even watch a long video to get the information they need. Employers that break up content into snackable pieces and deliver those segments through time-based narratives see the most positive results.5. Dont Jus t Measure Analyze the DataNow that employers have the tools to measure how employees are receiving and interacting with the content/information provided, its important to analyze the data. Which media type resonates the most? At what time of day are employees engaging with the content? Which devices are being used? What changes in behavior happened or actions were taken because of these communications? Understanding the data leads to better communication and improved ROI.

How to Get (And Maximize) Endorsements on LinkedIn

How to Get (And Maximize) Endorsements on LinkedInHow to Get (And Maximize) Endorsements on LinkedInHow to Maximize Your LinkedIn EndorsementsLinkedIn endorsements can be a huge help when it comes to the job search heres how to get more.LinkedIn endorsements are a simple way for your colleagues and connections to recognize your expertise in a specific field with just one click. In addition, these seemingly simple endorsements can elevate you and your profile above the other thousands of people on LinkedIn vying for the saatkorn career path as you. For example, a study by the Avid Careerist found that you will rank more highly in LinkedIn search results if you have a greater number of endorsements for the skill a recruiter is seeking.Since LinkedIns collaborative features were released, several million people received endorsements from colleagues they never thought to ask. Here are a few steps to optimize your endorsements and return the love. How to get endorsements on LinkedInList yo ur relevant skillsThink like a salesperson. Determine which of your technical skills and core competencies are most important to your industry and relevant to your current job goals. List these skills first, from most important to least important. This is a road map for people to endorse the correct talents.Rub a few backsStart with your closest colleagues, since these are the people who you know the best and are most likely to return the favor. Endorse the skills youve seen these people demonstrate in the workplace and they will be sure to reciprocate. After endorsing your closest colleagues, endorse the skills of those you met at important functions or during your time spent at work, such as clients, vendors, or freelancers.Ask for endorsements on LinkedInThis is the trickiest of all techniques how to ask for endorsements on LinkedIn. You want people to acknowledge your skills and strengths, but you dont want to come off as begging for disingenuous endorsements. Instead of sending tons of generic please endorse me messages, personalize your requests by making musiknote of a specific project you worked on with them. Gently remind them of your contributions, and ask them to offer comments on the project in the form of skill endorsements.Make updates and link your social media profilesDo you have a blog? This is a great way to display your skills and earn endorsements for connections you dont know that well. Share your latest blog posts using LinkedIns update feature, make changes to your profile often, and engage other users who connect with you. In other words, dont become the LinkedIn equivalent of a wallflower. There are many people are on LinkedIn, but few update their status on a regular basis. This means if you choose to post updates to LinkedIn, youll get on your connections radar. If youre sharing insightful quotes and quality content related to the LinkedIn skills you have listed, youll also give them a reason to endorse you for those skills.Lastly, r emember your mannersDont forget to say thank you after youve received an endorsement. So many LinkedIn users take the endorsements their friends and colleagues post for granted and never take the time to say thanks. This not only is rude, but it ensures these connections are less likely to help boost your personal brand again. 7 Habits You Should Pick Up if You Want to Be Seen as a Leader

7 Habits You Should Pick Up if You Want to Be Seen as a Leader7 Habits You Should Pick Up if You Want to Be Seen as a LeaderPowerful people dont become powerful by chance. They arent born leaders, they dont get randomly selected, and they arent handed power on a silver platter. Instead, power comes to them as a result of their behaviors, their actions, and their habits. Because of this, its possible for anyone to rise to a position of power, whether thats in the formal political sense or just in the context of your own office- all it takes is the right combination of habits, and the right mentality. If youre seeking more power or influence in your own life, or you just want to model your lifestyle on the powerful leaders that came before you, take inspiration from these seven habits1. They Never Speak Too MuchAbraham Lincoln was once quoted as saying that its better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. Certainly, some of the fruchtwein powerfu l people in the world have established their reputation by speaking clearly, eloquently, and often, but even in those cases, youll find that the speaker always says as little as possible. The effect is two-fold first, in accordance with Abe Lincolns wise quote, the less you say, the less you will betray about yourself. Quiet people are often seen as more intelligent and influential simply because they have fewer opportunities to say things they regret. Second, the more concisely you speak, the more authoritative you will appear. Strive for conversational minimalism.2. Theyre FlexibleRather than coming up with an idea or strategy and adhering to it rigidly, powerful people tend to be adaptable. This doesnt mean always compromising when you encounter opposition to your idea, but it does mean being willing to find an alternative way around a given obstacle perhaps if your boss cant be persuaded, you can seek approval elsewhere within the company. The world is unpredictable and full of unexpected challenges, so the most adaptable people tend to be the ones who solve the most problems, and are therefore seen as the most powerful.3. They Dont ArgueArguments can be functional, though in most cases, they waste energy that could better be spent proving your case through an action. If you voice your opinion only to be met with dissent, dont waste time further arguing your points or trying to convince someone who has in all likelihood already made up their mind. Instead, get to work on your plan and actively demonstrate that your side of the argument is the correct one. Its easy to argue against an idea, but its nearly impossible to argue against results. Powerful people arent worried about winning through an argument they simply want the best possible results, and wont waste time bickering to get there.4. They Stay Active in the CommunityThis works on multiple levels powerful people engage with their families, engage with their colleagues, and engage with their friends and community members. They never isolate themselves or try to gain power alone. In isolation, its easy to develop problems of perspective, and its hard to stay tuned to whats going on around you. Powerful people are appreciated because theyre socially involved with the people around them, and they are respected because they stay up to date. You cant do either of these things if you remove yourself from your people.5. They Think Several Moves AheadIn chess, as in life, the people who plan furthest ahead tend to come out on top. Powerful people tend to forgo rewards of the moment for greater rewards of the future, and are willing to make temporary sacrifices if thats what it takes to achieve victory. For example, most successful entrepreneurs first must go through a period of fiscal uncertainty and psychologically demanding work- a sacrifice that most people simply arent willing to make. They know that theyll face several months of risk and hardship, but if they plan carefully and wo rk hard, eventually the payouts are enormous.6. They Time Things CarefullyIn many cases, what you do doesnt matter nearly as much as when you do it. Think about a simple scenario in which you must break some bad news to your boss. Is it better to do it when your boss is flustered and annoyed, between meetings? Or better to do it during a period of calm, when he or she is in a relatively good mood? Think carefully before committing to any action, whether its as fleeting as a social greeting or as monumental as the launch of your companys debut product.7. They Distinguish ThemselvesPowerful leaders dont emerge unless they somehow distinguish themselves from the group in some way. If you spend your life going along with the flow, following the actions of those around you, and adhering to societal norms, its going to be virtually impossible for you to develop a powerful, influencing personality. Instead, make the effort to work harder than others, or speak louder than others, or think d ifferently from others. Its the only way to stand out.Power is very much a product of environment. If you conduct yourself with a powerful mindset and powerful habits to go along with it, eventually people will come to respect you as a powerful person, and your influence will grow. Just remember, habits are only habits if you stick to them consistently- so put these into place and adhere to them strictly if you want to see their fullest potential.More From Inc.3 Steps to Finding a Fulfilling Career18 Powerful Ways to Build Your Mental Toughness5 Rude Emails You Send Every DayPhoto of leader courtesy of Shutterstock.

Fritz John

Fritz John Fritz John Fritz John One hundred years after his birth, Fritz John remains one of Courant Institutes most beloved luminaries, wrote M. L. Ball in a New York University newsletter in the fall of 2010. Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1910, renowned mathematician Fritz John demonstrated a high proficiency in math at an early age. At the urging of his high school mathematics teacher, he attended the University of Göttingen in 1929 where he was befriended by another famous mathematician, Richard Courant, who was then the director of the Mathematics Institute. By 1933, he was caught up in the social upheaval created by Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, which under the guise of the Civil Service Law, began removing Jewish teachers from universities. Envisioning a bleak future in his homeland, John left the university in 1934 after completing his doctoral studies and followed Courant to St Johns College, Cambridge, England, where he spent one year teaching and continuing his studies. He came to the United States in 1935 as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky and later moved to New York University in 1946 where he rejoined Courant, at the Courant Institute named after him, for the remainder of his distinguished career. Early in his career, John studied the Radon transform, a concept introduced by the Austrian mathematician, Johann Radon, and applicable to the field of tomography. Following his early work, John published a paper that has since become a major resource for the study of three-dimensional tomography (the noninvasive determination of density or other structure obtained by attenuation of waves as they pass through the body). John Fritz is considered to be one of the world’s most renowned mathematicians. John is most widely known among mathematicians for his work involving partial differential equations, an area where there are few absolute rules, but rather requires a reliance on the mathematicians ingenuity and knowledge of applications in related fields. His work helped forge a deeper understanding of the fundamental laws of physics and engineering principles, such as Maxwells laws of electromagnetism. His unique approach to solving equations enabled him to describe the movements of waves in water or the bending of a material like cardboard, and addressing the difficult problem of how to describe mathematically what happens at the boundaries of oscillating objects. His book on partial differential equations is said to have had an enormous impact on the development of the subject and the training of younger mathematicians. In the latter stages of his career, John investigated the mathematical theory of equilibrium in nonlinear elasticity. Through these investigations he introduced the space of functions of bounded mean oscillations, which plays a fundamental role in harmonic analysis and nonlinear elliptic equations. The same work on rotation and strain led to other advances in the area of quasi-isometric mappings. Courant once described Johns work as done on the background of a philosophical desire to help understanding of the mathematical structure underlying natural phenomena. John was well liked and respected by his colleagues. While his work was widely praised, he showed little interest in publicity. According to Courant Institute Professor Emeritus Cathleen Morawetz, he once said that he wanted neither fame nor fortune but rather the grudging admiration of a few close friends. John died at his home in New Rochelle, NY, in 1994. In a final tribute at a memorial service at the Courant Institute, his son, Fred John, had this to say about his father: A number of characteristics seem to provide the overriding sense of my fathers nature. One, certainly, is the gentleness that marked his approach to life. He spoke softly, rarely raised his voice, hardly ever got angry. I often interrupted his work, but he never seemed to mind, was happy to see me, answer my questions, never seemed impatient to get back to the train of thought I had interrupted. Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications. There is no doubt that John is one of the most original and deep mathematical analysts of our time.

All You Want to Know About Majoring in Accounting

All You Want to Know About Majoring in Accounting All You Want to Know About Majoring in Accounting Accounting is the means by which a company or organization communicates its financial information. It is for this reason many call it the language of business. Individuals who are fluent in this language are a very valuable commodity in the business world which is perhaps why accounting is one of the most popular majors among college students. An accounting major, whether he or she earns an associate, bachelors, or more advanced degree, has a variety of career options from which to choose after graduation. Studying accounting includes learning about financial accounting- the reporting of an organizations financial information- and managerial accounting- the use of that data to measure the entitys performance and inform decisions about its future and controls. An accounting major learns how companies and other organizations financial records are prepared and maintained. He or she studies taxation, auditing, and financial reporting. Major Courses You Can Expect to Take Associate Degree Courses As a student earning a two-year degree in accounting, expect  to take the following classes: Introduction to AccountingComputerized AccountingCost AccountingAdministrative Management Bachelors Degree Courses While pursuing a four-year accounting degree, these are some of the courses you will take: Introduction to Financial AccountingIntroduction to Managerial AccountingFinancial Accounting Theory and PracticeCost AccountingIncome Tax AccountingAuditing Theory and PracticeAccounting Entities Masters Degree Courses Graduate students including those enrolled in an MBA program with a concentration in accounting will take the following classes: Advanced Financial AccountingFederal Income TaxationTaxation of Business EntitiesPartnership TaxationFinancial Statement Analysis and Recording Career Options With Your Degree Associate Degree: Bookkeeper, Accounting or Auditing ClerkBachelors Degree: Accountant, Auditor, Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Budget Analyst, Tax Examiner, Financial Examiner, Financial AnalystMasters Degree (including an MBA with a concentration in accounting): Accountant, Auditor, CPA, Financial Analyst, Management AnalystDoctoral Degree: Professor, Researcher Typical Work Settings Public accounting firms employ individuals with a bachelors or masters degree in accounting to prepare and maintain financial documents for the firms clients.  Other recipients of undergraduate or graduate accounting degrees work for companies and organizations as staff accountants. They are responsible for analyzing their employers financial information.  Individuals with associate degrees produce and maintain financial records for businesses and organizations. Some accounting graduates work for the government. Colleges and universities hire faculty who have doctoral degrees. How High School Students Can Prepare for This Major High school students can start getting ready to major in accounting before they even begin college. Many schools offer accounting classes, and students should take as many of those as possible. They should also take economics, finance, math, and computer science. What Else You Need to Know Some colleges have other names for the accounting major. They call it accountancy, accounting technology, or accounting and financial management.  Many companies are required to file documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a U.S. government agency. Only licensed Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are allowed to prepare these documents and therefore many accounting degree holders opt to get this license. It makes them more competitive job candidates. Individual states certify accountants and each has its own rules for doing so. All CPA candidates must meet specific educational requirements and take the Uniform CPA Examination. To keep their licenses, they must take continuing education courses. Studying accounting at a four-year college or university will lead to a Bachelors of Science (BS), Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, or Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Degree. There are two different types of associate degree programs in accounting. The coursework a student takes to earn an AAS, which stands for Associate in Applied Science, prepares him or her for employment. A student who gets an AS, or Associate in Science, is ready to transfer into a bachelor-level program in accounting. Masters degree programs are available for students who have an undergraduate degree in accounting or another business subject, as well as for those who have no prior background in this subject.Individuals who want to earn a masters degree can opt for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in accounting, a Masters of Science Degree in Accounting, or a Masters of Science Degree in Taxation. A New and Fresh Start to Your Career Search

A New and Fresh Start to Your Career Search A New and Fresh Start to Your Career Search If you are unemployed, it’s now a perfect time to begin a new career search. When I was the head of staffing for various Merrill Lynch businesses (for about 7 years), the first quarter of the year always yielded the most number of hires, followed by the second quarter of the year. Things slowed down towards the end of the third quarter and came to a grinding halt by the fourth quarter. So even though we are in a tough economy, this is the greatest number of green lights we’re going to get for a while, so let’s get going!Wipe away everything that didn’t work before: including any awkward networking interactions, resumes that had typos in them, and cover letters that just didn’t make the case for why you should be hired. Use what didn’t work to make your plan even better than before. So, let’s take a deep breath, get organized, get positive, and put a plan together for everything that needs to be done. Here goes:1) Identify your target companies: come up with a list of 10 and then take it to the next level. Organize this list in the following way: large companies v. small companies. Separate by industry as well. Indicate which firms you already have contacts with, and start to think about how you can get contacts where there are none now.2) Create and perfect your resume, cover letters, email signature, cell phone messages. All should be professional and clearly crafted. Your resume should have quantifiable results and accomplishments. Your cell phone should not have music on it.3) Conduct research: use online resources for jobseekers like Vault.com, TheGlassHammer.com, and a host of others. Find out everything you can about industries and companies.4) Ensure that you are ready to meet people and leave positive impressions through networking, informational interviews and of course, job interviews (phone screens and face-to-face). Many companies conduct phone screens first to save time and money. You have to ace these to move forward.5) Stay motivated and organized: The 11th commandment had to be: Never loose a business card. They are your entry way to networking so hold on tight to them and be organized about it. Ensure you are upbeat and positive and know that there will be a good conclusion to your search. You have to “fake it until you make it” because being negative will only repel those around you. As a recruiter, I could sniff out a candidate that was down and I could always spot someone who was upbeat. So do whatever you need to do to stay positive: workout regularly, stay current with industry news, volunteer, and pray if that works … (and I hope it does!) but stay positive. It’s that important.6) Be confident that once the offer comes your way, you can close it properly, dealing with all compensation issues (cash non-cash, vacation, start dates, etc.). How can you be confident about this? You have to think about it in advance. Think about the cash what you need and what the going rate is for this type of work . Think about vacation and if you could live with one week less than before. The more you prepare, the smoother you will come across in every interaction with the company. Your demeanor during your job search should be like a duck: calm as could be on the surface, with water that just rolls off your back and in the meantime, your legs are going a mile a minute to get where you need to be. Make sure you excel at all the points above. Don’t practice on your dream employer: practice with a friend in human resources, or a career coach that can let you know what you are doing well, what you need to adjust, and can give you ideas for how to improve overall. It’s that important in this market. Happy new year and I hope 2009 brings you the job you are looking for!Connie Thanasoulis (on-campus expert) is co-founder of SixFigureStart (www.SixFigureStart.com).

Teen Job Interview Questions, Answers, and Tips

Teen Job Interview Questions, Answers, and Tips Teen Job Interview Questions, Answers, and Tips When you are a teen preparing for a job interview, it can be helpful to review  typical interview questions  that you will most likely be asked. Reviewing answers can also help you come up with your own responses. Take the time to personalize your answers, so that they reflect you both as a person and as a candidate for employment. Practice Interviewing in Advance It can be nerve-wracking to apply for a job as a teenager, since you don’t have much experience in the application and interviewing process. Its a good idea to practice answering the most commonly-asked interview questions ahead of time. The best strategy is to have a parent, sibling, or friend role-play the interview with you so that you can practice your answers, work on eye contact and body language, and gain experience in “thinking on your feet” before your interview. You’ll find that this is also a great confidence-builder, so you’ll probably feel a lot less nervous when it comes time to talk with a hiring manager. 1:38 Watch Now: 7 Most Important Interview Tips for Teenagers Common Teen Interview Questions Here are 10 of the most commonly-asked questions that teens encounter during job interviews, along with some accompanying samples of good answers. 1. Why are you looking for a job? What They Want to Know: Of course, everyone wants to make money at a job, but the reasons you should share with a potential employer should reflect your interest in the field, or in helping to develop your skill set. My favorite hobby is baking for my family and friends. I’m hoping to gain restaurant experience in order to decide if I have what it takes to go to culinary school and become a pastry chef. Expand More Answers: Why Are You Looking for a Job?   2. Why are you interested in working for our company? What They Want to Know: Employers ask this question to gauge your interest in the field, and to see if you have done your research. Make sure you check out the company’s website at the very least and familiarize yourself with what the company does, what the work and the work culture are like, and what’s important to them. I am studying to become a LEEDS-certified architect at the University of ABC, and so I’d really like to get some “hands’ on” experience at a leading “green” construction firm so that, when the time comes, I’ll be able to collaborate well with construction managers, general contractors, and sub-contractors. Expand More Answers: How Teens Should Answer: Why Do You Want to Work Here?   3. How has school prepared you for working at our company? What They Want to Know: Here is your opportunity to talk about the skills you have gained in your education that will make you an ideal candidate for the position. My best subject in high school is English, which is why I hope to go into digital marketing one day. I’m also a bit of a computer “geek” and know my way around Adobe Creative Cloud â€" I’ve used Photoshop, InDesign, and Publisher to design the layout of our school newspaper. I believe I have the communications and design skills you’re looking for in your next marketing intern. Expand More Answers: Teen Job Interview Questions About School and Work   4. Why should we hire you? What They Want to Know: New hires take time to train, and the company wants to know you are worth it. Let them know about your interest in contributing to the company immediately, and be sure to mention if you think they are a firm you would like to consider when your studies are complete. My teachers would tell you that I have an excellent work ethic â€" I have a perfect attendance record, have never been late for class, and am diligent in studying (which is why I’m an honors student). You should hire me because I’m quick off the mark, good at retaining information, and easily adapt to new processes. Expand More Answers: Why Should We Hire You?   5. What do you think it takes to be successful in this position? What They Want to Know: The job posting can be very helpful in letting you know how they will want you to answer this question. Let them know about the skills you have that they are looking for. Front-of-house staff need to be cheerful and focused on their customers’ needs â€" and I suspect that they also need to be mature enough to resolve any complaints tactfully. I’m an extrovert who loves engaging with others, which is why I was elected President of our student counsel. I’ve also done a lot of volunteer fundraising and event coordination for our school and my church, so I know how to work on teams, build morale, and create positive experiences for people. Expand More Answers:  Teen Job Interview Questions About Success 6. How would you describe your ability to work as a team member? What They Want to Know: There have likely been many times you have worked as a team, on projects, in sports or while volunteering. The interviewer will want to hear a specific example of a time you worked successfully in a team situation. I’m very active in my high school band, and was chosen to serve as a band officer last year because of my enthusiasm for teamwork and my willingness to support my peers. I’m also first chair of our percussion section, and have led our section to repeated wins at state Solo and Ensemble competitions. I really enjoy coordinating practices and motivating our section members. Expand More Answers: If You’re a Teen About to Interview, Here’s What to Know About Teams 7. What has been your most rewarding accomplishment? What They Want to Know: You don’t want to brag, but you should share an accomplishment that relates to some of the qualities or experiences required for the job you’re interviewing for.   My biggest success, I think, was being accepted into university and offered a full scholarship based on my good grades and my enthusiastic leadership and participation in high school groups. My family immigrated here when I was in sixth grade, so it was a challenge to learn a new language and adapt to a new society. I’ll be the first of my family to attend college, and am so excited about what my future holds! Expand More Answers:  What Were Your Biggest Successes and Failures? 8. What are your salary expectations? What They Want to Know: With this question, the employer is trying to establish that your expectations are reasonable. As a young worker, the salary you are offered will probably align with an entry-level position. It’s usually best to avoid a specific number unless you know for a fact what the job pays. I’m happy to negotiate my pay level, since the most important thing I want from this job is solid work experience and â€" I hope â€" positive referrals from you eventually. What did you pay the last entry-level person who did this job? Expand More Answers: Interview Questions About Your Salary Expectations   9. Tell me about a major problem you recently handled. What They Want to Know: With this question, the interviewer is trying to determine how skilled you are at problem-solving. It’s fine to use an example from school, work, sports or volunteering. Make sure you show a positive resolution. Our German club had raised the money to attend a convention in Leavenworth, Washington. We could afford our hotel and food, but the school system didn’t have the funding to provide us with a bus. Most of our parents work full-time, and so we weren’t getting enough volunteers for carpool drivers on our sign-up sheet. So I got a list of everyone’s parents and grandparents’ phone numbers and called them to explain our dire need for transportation. I guess I was convincing, because by the end of the day I had more than enough volunteer drivers. Expand More Answers: Interview Questions About Handling Problems   10. Have you ever had difficulty with a supervisor or teacher? What They Want to Know: The interviewer will ask this question to determine how you relate to authority. Always answer honestly, but make sure that you have a positive outcome. Remember that the most difficult situations are sometimes the best learning experiences.   I love both playing varsity football and performing with our high school’s marching band. At first my coach and band director told me that I’d have to choose one or the other, since practices sometimes conflicted and there was no time to change at halftime into my band uniform. But I convinced them to compromise with me, since I’m a strong football team member and a first-chair trumpet player. The band director agreed to let me perform in my football uniform, and Coach let me leave football practice early on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I wouldn’t miss marching practice. Expand More Answers:  Have You Ever Had Difficulty Working With a Manager? Tips for Handling a Job Interview for Teens Review these tips so that you’ll have all of the information you need to make a great impression at your next job interview. Be Prepared. Dont only show up for the interview. The more information you have prepared in advance, the better impression you will make on the interviewer. Take the time to get working papers (if you need them) and references before you start looking for a job. Do your research. Learn all you can about the position and the company. The job posting and others for similar positions  can offer valuable information  about what they are looking for in a candidate. That will let you know what skills you should be emphasizing on your resume and in your interview. Checking out the company website will give you insight into the  company culture and about exactly what they do and aspire to accomplish. All this information will allow you the opportunity to give complete, educated answers to anything the interviewer might ask. Bring the following with you to the interview: Completed job application (if the employer doesnt have it already)Working papers  (if you need them)ReferencesResume  (if you have one)Notepad / pen Be Polite. Its essential to have  good manners  when interviewing. Shake your interviewers hand. Make sure you  listen carefully and thoughtfully  to the interviewer. Dont sit until you are invited to. Dont slouch in your chair. Dont use slang or swear. Be polite, positive, and professional throughout the interview. Know Your Schedule. Know what days and hours you are available to work, as the employer will almost surely ask. Flexibility is an asset, because the more time you are available, the easier it is for the employer to set  a work schedule. Also know how you are going to get to and from work if you dont drive. Be on Time. Arrive at the interview site a few minutes early. If youre not sure where to go, get directions ahead of time. If you aren’t driving yourself, make sure you have a reliable ride. Go on Your Own. If your mom or dad brings you to an interview, dont bring them into the interview room with you. Its important that you speak for yourself and connect with the interviewer, without someone elses assistance. You need to present yourself as a mature, responsible candidate for employment. Send a Thank You Note. Take a few minutes to thank the person who interviewed you. If you have an email address, send an email thank-you note, otherwise send a paper note  thanking the interviewer for taking the time  to meet with you.  How to Make the Best Impression The key to successful interviewing for teens is to do exactly what a professional candidate for employment would do. Thats the best way to make a positive impression on a prospective employer and to enhance your chances of getting the job. Dress appropriately, answer questions in an informed manner, have questions ready to ask the interviewer, and, in general, make the best impression you can on the interviewer.

5 Hard Lessons All Young Professionals Must Learn

5 Hard Lessons All Young Professionals Must Learn 5 Hard Lessons All Young Professionals Must Learn Every new job brings a variety of surprises and lessons to learn. Even if youre working in a similar role but at a different company, there will be a learning curve that comes with the move. For young professionals entering the workforce for the first time, that learning curve is much, much steeper. Adapting to the business world is not only challenging, but also necessary to be successful after graduation. This article is for you, young professionals. In your first year in the business world, you will learn a lot more than merely what your job title says you do. Although you can never fully prepare yourself for these situations, here are five hard lessons you will learn at your first job, along with explanations on how to deal with them: 1. Accept Criticism With Grace This lesson is particularly difficult because a lot of people can become defensive when faced with criticism, especially young professionals who are trying to make their way in a new career or company. If you arent willing to accept criticism gracefully, you can really get off on a wrong foot. Instead of getting upset, take the criticism.  Before responding, repeat it to yourself internally. Recognize that the  feedback is related to your work, not to your character. No employer wants to bring someone on only to let them fail. At the end of the day, your goal should align with the companys vision. The only way to find out if you might be running in the wrong direction is through feedback â€" both positive and negative. 2. Own Both Your Failures and Your Successes You dont want to be a braggart, but if you have done something noteworthy and you think your boss isnt aware of it, mention it. For example, if you discovered an error that was going to cause problems and you resolved it, give them a heads up. This lets your boss know that you add value to the company. The flip side to this is that you should also own up to your mistakes. You dont want your boss to find out  that you  did something wrong, knew about, and tried to hide it. Its easier to fix a problem as soon as it happens than it is to fix it after its been allowed to fester. 3. Know How and When to Ask for Directions Your first job out of college will be a  very different experience from  your time in school. Theres no outline that lists all your duties, deadlines, grades, or how youll be scored. The upside to this  is that theres more leeway to make your own path in the post-graduate world. If you dont understand the nuts and bolts of a project but understand the overall concept, you can take it and make it your own. Most employers arent going to require you to execute the project in the exact same ways as everyone does else as long as you reach your projects goals. Dont knock on your bosss door for every answer that could easily be found on Google. On the other hand, if you feel like youre floundering and have lost sight of the end goal, its a good idea to ask for help. 4. Adapt to Your Companys Culture Forget what youve seen in movies or TV shows that depict life in an office; the real thing is almost always very different. Every company has a unique culture made up of both whats in the employee handbook and the unwritten rules people learn from their peers. The company may have an explicit dress code or specific hours when everyone has to be at work, but you will really learn about the workplace and what others expect of you by stepping back and observing everyone else. On the same note, dont assume that if the dress code says casual dress is fine you can stumble into the office wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt. Even if youre not technically breaking the rules, youll stand out if your entire team wears slacks and a polo every day. 5. Know Where to Draw the Line Between Your Work Life and Personal Life Ive seen many young professionals give way too much of themselves personally at work. You can be friends with your coworkers, but your office is not your fraternity or sorority house. Its not the place to bring your breakup drama or your drinking stories from the previous weekend. You also need to know when to disconnect from work. So many of us live in an environment where were always connected. If you find yourself constantly checking emails when youre not in the office, step back and assess if this is your companys culture and expectation or if this is your habit of always having your phone in hand. â€" In my experience, the hard lessons mentioned above are by far the most common challenges that Ive seen young professionals face. Take note of each, and youll be well on your way to a successful professional career! Meghann Isgan is an HR consultant working at One Click.
